Every Sunday after lunch, our long-term care residents gather for an hour of music, praise, and community. Family members often join, making it a special multi-generational experience.
Residents take time after lunch to return to their rooms for toileting and a short rest, ensuring they’re comfortable and ready to fully enjoy the hour of gratitude and song.
During hymn sing, we play a mix of classic Christian songs and country favorites, with a special fondness for Alan Jackson. The lyrics are projected on a large screen so everyone can follow along.
We sing together, moving in unison with the rhythm of the music. The mix includes old-time favorites that bring back memories, alongside upbeat songs that lift spirits and inspire movement, clapping, or gentle sway.
Hymn sing isn’t just a music activity — it’s a ritual of connection. Residents and family members alike feel the warmth of shared voices, and the act of singing together promotes:
Emotional well-being through music and nostalgia
Cognitive engagement through following lyrics
Spiritual fulfillment and gratitude
Social connection within the community
The hour becomes a space where participants can pause, reflect, and simply be present together.
Each session ends with the timeless song, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” This final piece reminds us all of the power of harmony, community, and mindful gratitude, leaving residents uplifted and connected as they return to the rest of their Sunday routines.
Hymn sing reflects the essence of Vintage Vitality™: nurturing mind, body, and spirit through meaningful, joyful engagement. Singing together allows residents to age with grace, cultivate mindfulness, and stay connected, proving that vitality comes in many forms — not just physical, but emotional and spiritual as well.
In small towns, wellness often grows through shared rituals — a song, a memory, a moment of gratitude. Hymn sing reminds us that aging with grace is a community practice, lived together one Sunday at a time.
While hymn sing nurtures the spirit through music and shared gratitude, our Social Studio offers a cozy, intimate space for coloring, conversation, and creative expression. Read our blog Social Studio: Small Moments of Creativity in Long-Term Care to see how residents build connection, mindfulness, and joy through art and community.
