Returning to Mount Forest for a Tai Chi class after a winter break felt like coming home. My beloved dog’s passing kept me away for a while, and though I practiced alone in my living room, I had missed the energy of a shared class.
As I entered the room today, I was greeted by familiar faces and warm smiles. Hugs, chatter, and laughter instantly reminded me of the joy of moving together. Even before we began, I noticed how the simple act of connecting — greeting one another, exchanging smiles — set the tone for a morning of openness and presence.
Tai Chi is beautiful on its own, but in a group, it becomes something more. The movements flow, energy circulates, and laughter often bubbles up as we discover our bodies remember movements differently after months apart.
Warm-ups with a Smile: Before swaying or shaking exercises, I asked students to walk around the room with a smile and greet one another. This breaks barriers, encourages short chats, and fosters a sense of connection.
Movement with Awareness: Even small shifts in weight, gentle stretches, and flowing hand movements cultivate balance, coordination, and inner focus.
Shared Joy: Mistakes are met with smiles, not judgment. Laughter reminds us that Tai Chi is about connection, not perfection.
Teaching in a small town reminds me that wellness is built one shared moment at a time. People find me through word-of-mouth, conversations while walking downtown, or casual chats at the post office. The generosity, warmth, and curiosity of students create a circle of energy that feeds everyone.
Today, I realized again why I teach: not just to guide movements, but to witness joy, build community, and help people reconnect with their bodies and breath. Even a by-donation class becomes a rich exchange of energy, gratitude, and mutual care.
Returning to teach today, I felt grateful for the opportunity to move, laugh, and share Tai Chi once more. The students who attended are already looking forward to our next class on March 16 — and so am I. Each session is a small celebration of health, presence, and community.
