When I stand and bring my hands together in the Open and Close movement of Sun Style Tai Chi, the world around me begins to fade.
As my hands slowly pull apart, I feel as though I am stretching a piece of soft, invisible silk. It isn’t just a movement of my arms. My chest opens. My lungs expand. My heart quietly makes room for the day ahead.
In that moment, I feel limitless—like the horizon.
Then my hands begin their gentle journey back toward each other. As they draw closer, I sense a soft resistance, almost like bringing two magnets together. Something subtle yet powerful exists in that space between my palms.
This is where I find my center.
With this simple movement, I gather all my scattered thoughts and guide them home, settling them softly into my Dantian—my core, my quiet center.
In this moment, I am not a teacher.
Not a business owner.
Not even a woman turning sixty.
I am simply breath and balance.
The peace I feel reminds me of a needle hidden in cotton—soft and quiet on the outside, yet strong and unbreakable within.
This is my gentle strength.
In Tai Chi, we are not moving to get somewhere else.
We move so we can arrive fully in the place we already are.
And sometimes, the most meaningful place to arrive is the quiet space between opening and closing.
Try It Yourself
Stand comfortably with your feet shoulder-width apart.
Raise your hands slowly in front of your chest.
Open your arms gently as if expanding a soft ball of air.
Then slowly bring your hands back toward each other.
Breathe naturally.
Notice the space between your palms.
That quiet space is where balance begins.
