By Nelda Rodillo | Board-Certified TCHI Instructor | Founder of Vintage Vitality™ | Creator of The Unfreezing Hour™, and Resilience Through Tai Chi™
What began with a small group of students, a borrowed space, and a simple belief in the power of gentle movement is continuing to grow.
This fall, Vintage Vitality™ is reaching more communities than ever before.
My five-day teaching schedule now includes 12 classes, bringing gentle Tai Chi, Qigong, Chair Yoga and mindful movement to older adults in communities across the region.
And while the schedule itself is exciting, the numbers tell only part of the story.
The real story is about people.
It is about the older adult who wants to feel steadier on their feet.
It is about the person who has become less active because they are afraid of falling.
It is about someone who wants to maintain strength and mobility as they age, but doesn't feel comfortable in a traditional fitness environment.
It is about the person who simply wants to move, breathe, connect with others and feel good in their own body again.
As we move toward autumn, I think often about how important these months can be for older adults.
Winter brings beautiful things—but it can also bring icy sidewalks, snow, shorter days and more time spent indoors. For someone who already feels uncertain about their balance or strength, winter can make everyday movement feel even more challenging.
This is why fall is such a meaningful time to build a foundation.
Strength can be practiced.
Balance can be nurtured.
Mobility can be maintained.
Confidence can grow.
Through gentle, consistent movement, participants can prepare not only for a season, but for everyday life.
Tai Chi encourages weight shifting, controlled movement, coordination and mindful awareness of the body. Qigong offers gentle flowing movement and breath. Chair Yoga provides accessible ways to work with mobility and flexibility. And together, these practices create something even more important: an opportunity to keep moving.
Vintage Vitality™ has grown organically through relationships, word of mouth and the trust of the communities I have been privileged to serve.
Every new class represents another doorway.
Another community where an older adult can walk into a welcoming room and discover that movement does not have to be intimidating.
Another place where people can gather, laugh, learn and support one another.
Another opportunity to remind ourselves that aging does not mean we stop growing.
My vision has always been larger than teaching movements.
I want to help create communities where people can age with dignity, strength and grace.
That vision continues to guide Vintage Vitality™ as it reaches further.
As Vintage Vitality™ grows, so does my commitment to learning.
On August 28, 2026, I will complete my certification in Tai Chi for Osteoporosis. Just one week later, on September 4, I will continue my professional development with certification in Tai Chi for Rehabilitation.
These areas of learning are especially meaningful because our communities are made up of people with different bodies, different abilities and different needs.
Accessible movement means meeting people where they are.
It means understanding that one person may be working on balance, another on strength, another on mobility, and another simply on regaining confidence in movement.
The more I learn, the better equipped I am to create thoughtful, inclusive movement experiences for the people I serve.
And then, in October, another very special chapter awaits.
I will travel to Portland, Maine, to participate in a Yang 24 workshop with Dr. Paul Lam.
For me, this is more than another workshop.
It is an opportunity to continue learning from someone whose work has had such a profound influence on the way I approach Tai Chi for health and active aging.
I am grateful that this journey continues to give me opportunities to learn from others while bringing that knowledge back home to the small communities I serve.
There is something special that happens when people practice together.
A room begins quietly.
Feet settle onto the floor.
Breathing slows.
Shoulders soften.
Then movement begins.
One person may be working on balance. Another may be rebuilding confidence after becoming less active. Someone else may simply enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the practice.
But gradually, something happens beyond the physical.
People begin to know one another.
They encourage each other.
They notice when someone is absent.
They celebrate small improvements.
A weekly movement class becomes a place of belonging.
This is why I believe community-based movement matters so much.
Health is not only about what happens inside our bodies. It is also about what happens between people.
This fall will be another important chapter for Vintage Vitality™.
In October, I will also travel to Charlottetown to present my community-based work at CAG2026, the Canadian Association on Gerontology's annual scientific and educational meeting.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what has been growing in these small communities—and to listen, learn and connect with others who are working toward healthier aging.
And perhaps that will become the beginning of another chapter.
After CAG2026, I hope to continue expanding Vintage Vitality™ into more communities and creating more opportunities for older adults to experience accessible, meaningful movement close to home.
Because the goal is not simply to reach more places.
The goal is to reach more people.
More people who deserve to feel strong.
More people who deserve to feel steady.
More people who deserve to feel connected.
More people who deserve to discover that their bodies are still capable of learning, adapting and moving forward.
When I look at the schedule today, I sometimes think about how far this journey has come.
But I also think about where it started.
Three students.
No permanent venue.
One small community.
And a belief that gentle movement could make a difference.
That belief has never changed.
Vintage Vitality™ continues to grow—not quickly for the sake of growth, but thoughtfully, one community at a time.
As autumn approaches, my hope is that every participant who walks into one of these classes will leave with a little more strength, a little more confidence, a little more balance—and perhaps a little more joy.
Because preparing for the winter months is about more than learning how to navigate snow and ice.
It is about preparing our bodies, our minds and our communities to keep moving forward.
Movement. Mindfulness. Connection. Reflection.
That is the heart of Vintage Vitality™.
And this fall, the circle is growing.
One class.
One community.
One person at a time.
