BS Criminology Students at Cavite State University after our Tai Chi sessions
By Nelda Rodillo | Founder of Vintage Vitality™ | Creator of The Unfreezing Hour™, and Resilience Through Tai Chi™
The air in the training hall was dense with anticipation. Standing before me were Criminology students at Cavite State University in the Philippines—freshmen step-by-step uncovering their paths, and fourth-year seniors preparing to step onto the frontlines of law enforcement. They were young, strong, and highly trained in high-impact martial arts. Yet, beneath their disciplined exterior lay the heavy, unseen pressure of their future roles.
They were trained to fight, but they had not yet been trained how to down-regulate.
As a supplement to their physical education martial arts curriculum, I was invited to introduce them to a different kind of strength: the unbreakable power of internal resilience through Sun-style Tai Chi and The Unfreezing Hour™. Over the course of intensive weeks, I worked with these 300+ future officers section by section, tailoring our daily focuses to systematically unlock their physical and mental potential.
We began exactly where every true somatic healing journey must begin: by addressing the autonomic nervous system. Future law enforcement officers live in a chronic state of anticipatory stress, a constant "fight-or-flight" loop that locks up the physical body and freezes the mind.
To break this cycle, we initiated The Unfreezing Hour™ for each student section, using the 18 fluid movements of Shibashi Qigong as our foundational warm-up.

Shibashi Qigong Movements ──> Vagus Nerve Stimulation ──> Decreased Cortisol ──> Elevated Mental Clarity
From a physiological standpoint, the rhythmic, repetitive arcs of Shibashi serve as a profound hack for the vagus nerve. By pairing deep, diaphragmatic breathing with continuous, non-straining movement, we systematically send a safety signal to the brainstem. Watching each class section shift in unison from rigid, hyper-vigilant posture into a collective, synchronized flow was nothing short of poetic. The heavy tension in the room visibly thawed, replaced by an expansive, calm focus.
Following our Shibashi warm-up, we transitioned into the precise geometry of Sun-style Tai Chi. Known globally for its unique footwork and higher, more upright stances, Sun-style was the perfect bridge for these martial arts students.
While traditional combat sports emphasize explosive, linear strength, Sun-style Tai Chi cultivates biomechanical resilience.
Hydrating the Fascia: The gentle, spiraling motions unique to Sun-style place dynamic, three-dimensional tension on our connective tissue matrix. This hydrates the deep fascial nets, unlocking joint spaces that are often compacted by heavy tactical training.
The Power of the Qigong Step: Every step in Sun-style is controlled and deliberate. This intense focus on weight-shifting heavily recruits the deep stabilizing muscles of the core and ankles, drastically improving dynamic balance and spatial awareness.
For a criminologist, resilience is the ultimate asset. Sun-style Tai Chi teaches the body how to absorb force without snapping, and how to redirect chaotic energy with absolute, unshakeable composure.
Teaching those 300 vibrant souls, section by section over those two powerful weeks, remains one of the most rewarding milestones of my life as a movement educator. They entered the hall seeking to master physical combat, but they walked away mastering the internal landscape of their own resilience.
Reflecting on that beautiful experience in the Philippines, my vision for institutional wellness continues to expand. While training the youth is vital, I often look back and wish I had also trained the university faculty and administrative staff. The educators shaping these bright minds carry an equally heavy load of secondary trauma and occupational burnout.
Whether you are a young cadet prepping for the line of duty, a university professor managing a demanding lecture schedule, or a senior citizen reclaiming your physical autonomy, the lesson remains identical: True resilience is not the absence of pressure. It is the ability to maintain your inner flow right in the middle of the storm.
