By Nelda Rodillo | Board-Certified TCHI Instructor | Founder of Vintage Vitality™ | Creator of The Unfreezing Hour™, and Resilience Through Tai Chi™
Not long ago, I sat down to write a simple letter.
I wasn't seeking recognition, promoting my work, or hoping to be featured anywhere. I simply wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) and its founder, Dr. Paul Lam, whose Sun-style Tai Chi programs have profoundly influenced my journey as an instructor and the lives of the people I have the privilege of teaching.
Sometimes, the smallest acts of gratitude have a way of coming full circle.
A short time after sending my letter, Maria from the Tai Chi for Health Institute graciously replied on behalf of Dr. Paul Lam. Her encouraging words touched me deeply. In my reply, I thanked her once again and shared several photographs from our Tai Chi classes, never imagining where that simple exchange would lead.
Then came a wonderful surprise.
I received the 300th Commemorative Issue of the international Tai Chi and Health Newsletter, and there, among stories from around the world, was my letter—accompanied by two photographs from our classes.
I felt deeply honored, humbled, and incredibly grateful.
Reaching a 300th newsletter is a remarkable milestone for any international organization. It reflects decades of dedication to improving health and well-being through Tai Chi and celebrates the global community that has grown around Dr. Paul Lam's vision.
To have my letter and our class photos selected for this commemorative edition is an honor that I will always treasure.
Yet as I looked through the published newsletter, one thought kept returning to me:
This recognition is not mine alone.
It belongs to every student who has ever stood beside me, trusted the process, embraced gentle movement, and discovered that it is never too late to care for our bodies, minds, and spirits.
What moved me most about the feature was that it quietly reflected something I have come to believe with all my heart:
Tai Chi has no borders.
Its gentle movements speak a universal language of hope, healing, resilience, and human connection.
The newsletter brought together three chapters of my journey that, although separated by distance, are united by the same purpose.
One of the published photographs features our wonderful participants in Palmerston, Ontario.
Every class reminds me why I began teaching. Together we laugh, learn, encourage one another, and celebrate progress—not perfection. Through our Vintage Vitality™ community, I have witnessed people regain confidence in their balance, improve their mobility, and discover that healthy aging can be joyful, empowering, and deeply connected.
Watching this community grow has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.
Another published photograph captures one of the most meaningful experiences of my teaching journey: introducing Tai Chi to Persons Deprived of Liberty at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Trece Martires, Cavite, Philippines.
It was a powerful reminder that healing is not limited by circumstance.
Within those walls, Tai Chi became a quiet space for breathing, reflection, stress reduction, and personal dignity. The experience reinforced my belief that gentle movement can offer comfort, hope, and moments of peace wherever people are.
Although the newsletter featured our Ontario classes and the BJMP program, my published letter also spoke about another community that holds a special place in my heart—the Ginintuang Binhi Elderly Association in the Philippines.
Founded by my parents, Aida and Cornelio Gatpandan, this organization represents a legacy of service that continues to inspire me. Sharing Dr. Paul Lam's Tai Chi programs with its members has been one of the greatest joys of my teaching journey.
Seeing older adults embrace movement, confidence, friendship, and healthier aging—whether in Canada or the Philippines—reminds me that the values we share are far greater than the distances that separate us.
This experience has reminded me that genuine gratitude has a remarkable way of connecting people.
A simple thank-you letter became an opportunity to celebrate communities across two countries, different generations, and diverse walks of life.
It also reaffirmed something I have long believed:
Tai Chi is more than a series of movements.
It is a way of building community.
It is a way of restoring confidence.
It is a way of helping people discover strength, peace, and hope—one gentle step at a time.
To Maria, Dr. Paul Lam, and everyone at the Tai Chi for Health Institute, thank you for the kindness you have shown and for including our story in this special commemorative edition.
To my students in Ontario, the members of the Ginintuang Binhi Elderly Association in the Philippines, and the participants at BJMP Cavite, thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. This recognition celebrates all of us.
As we continue moving together, I hope we never underestimate the impact of a kind word, a grateful heart, or a single step taken with intention.
Because sometimes, one simple letter can become part of a much larger story.
