In Sun Style Tai Chi, the movement of Brush Knee follows the rhythm of the form, coming after Single Whip. Each movement prepares the body and mind for the next, yet today my attention rests entirely on Brush Knee.
As I move into the posture, my hand brushes softly past my knee while the other hand extends forward in a gentle push. I first step slightly to the side, then allow my back foot to follow—bringing my body naturally to face the new direction. This is the follow step, characteristic of Sun Style Tai Chi, gentle and balanced.
It is not a large or dramatic movement.
Yet within it, I feel something meaningful.
The brushing hand feels like sweeping leaves from a quiet garden path. The forward hand is steady, guided by breath and balance.
The follow step allows my body to turn gracefully, moving as one with my hands and breath. My feet feel rooted yet light, my shoulders relaxed, my mind centered.
In that moment, the movement becomes more than a technique.
It becomes a lesson.
Life does not always ask us to push forward forcefully. Sometimes we simply need to shift, turn, and follow the next step, moving with patience and calm intention.
Brush Knee reminds me that progress can be gentle.
One quiet step to the side.
One follow step that turns the body.
One clearing motion.
One calm breath at a time.
And just like a garden path after the leaves have been brushed aside, the way forward begins to reveal itself.
Stand comfortably and relax your shoulders.
Take a small step to the side, then bring your back foot to follow—allowing your body to turn naturally in the new direction.
Let one hand brush softly past your knee while the other extends forward in a gentle push.
Keep your movements light and relaxed.
Imagine you are clearing a small path in front of you.
Move slowly and breathe naturally.
Sometimes the gentlest movements open the clearest path.
