Energy flows through our bodies in subtle, yet powerful ways. In both my yoga and meditation practice, I pay attention to the seven chakras — energy centers that help balance our mind, body, and spirit. Over time, I’ve learned that pausing to honor these centers adds depth to both movement and stillness.
Chakras are energy centers in the body, each associated with physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being. They guide the flow of life force, often called prana or chi, and can influence how we feel, move, and connect to ourselves.
Balancing the chakras helps:
Increase awareness
Support emotional wellbeing
Promote a sense of calm and grounded energy
Enhance connection between body, mind, and spirit
Location: Base of the spine
Essence: Grounding, safety, stability
How I honor it: In Tai Chi, I pause and place my attention here to root myself before moving.
Location: Lower abdomen
Essence: Creativity, joy, fluidity
Location: Upper abdomen
Essence: Personal power, confidence, energy
Location: Center of chest
Essence: Love, compassion, connection
Location: Throat
Essence: Communication, expression, truth
Location: Forehead, between the eyebrows
Essence: Intuition, clarity, insight
Location: Top of the head
Essence: Spiritual connection, awareness, peace
I’ve even created my own chakra cards. Each time I sit to meditate or practice yoga, I pick a card to focus on a particular chakra. It helps me:
Notice where my energy may feel blocked
Give intention to my movement
Cultivate balance and calm
During Tai Chi, I often pause to connect with my root chakra, grounding myself before flowing through the forms. This simple attention creates stability, presence, and awareness throughout the practice.
Honoring and balancing the chakras is not about rigid rules — it’s about listening to your body and energy. When we create space for these energy centers, we feel:
More centered and calm
Emotionally steady
Physically supported and flexible
Spiritually connected, even in small daily practices
Whether through yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, or simply a mindful pause, taking a moment to honor your chakras enriches the practice.
It is a reminder that energy is alive within us and that even the smallest pause can create alignment, balance, and flow.
