Someone once asked me, “What is the difference between Tai Chi and yoga when it comes to the mind-body connection?”
I practice both. I’m certified in both. I teach mostly Tai Chi because of space limitations — but in my personal practice, I combine them regularly. And I can honestly say, I love them both. I will never give up one for the other.
Tai Chi is often described as meditation in motion.
The movements are slow, continuous, and flowing. There is no rush. Each posture transitions seamlessly into the next, requiring awareness, balance, and intention.
When I practice Tai Chi, I feel:
Deep coordination between upper and lower body
Heightened body awareness
Calm focus
Improved balance
Tai Chi strengthens the connection between the mind and the body through deliberate, controlled movement. You cannot rush it. You must be present.
For me, Tai Chi enhances coordination in a way that feels both grounding and fluid. It teaches patience and internal awareness.
Yoga connects the mind and body differently.
Through held poses, gentle flows, and breath awareness, yoga brings attention to flexibility, lengthening, and strength. The focus is often on alignment and sensation — noticing where you feel stretch, engagement, or resistance.
When I practice yoga, I feel:
Increased flexibility
Greater openness in the hips and shoulders
Strength in the core and arms
A sense of release
Yoga invites stillness within posture. Even in movement, there is a quality of settling and grounding. It teaches me to breathe into areas of tightness and soften.
In my personal practice, I often blend the two.
Sometimes I do a full hour of Tai Chi and then use yoga as my cool down — stretching, lengthening, and settling the body.
Other times, I begin with yoga as a warm-up to open my joints and muscles, and then flow into Tai Chi and Qigong.
Combining them makes me feel deeply relaxed and complete.
Yoga helps me with flexibility.
Tai Chi strengthens my coordination.
Both support balance — physically and mentally.
Each practice enhances the other.
Yoga prepares my body to move more freely in Tai Chi.
Tai Chi refines my awareness and control in yoga.
Together, they create a fuller mind-body experience than either one alone.
