Sometimes inspiration doesn’t come from the famous or the accomplished.
Sometimes it comes from ordinary people — people whose small gestures, persistence, and joy remind me what’s possible.
They may not know the impact they have.
But I can’t help feeling admiration, a quiet smile in my heart, and deep gratitude for what they do.
In my line dancing class, there’s a woman named Cathy.
I didn’t even know she was in her seventies until we chatted. She’s always at the front row, sometimes alone, leading by example. I stay in the middle — a newcomer, unsure of my steps — but Cathy is steady and confident.
She is graceful, focused, and moves like she’s in her fifties. During breaks, she sometimes shows me the steps I struggle with. She also joined my Tai Chi class and never missed a session.
At 77, she is fully engaged with life.
She inspires me to move, to practice, to care for my body, and to dream of a future where age is not a limit.
Then there’s another Cathy — a resident at my workplace.
She uses a wheelchair and can only move one hand easily. She faces challenges most of us can’t imagine. Yet she never misses a mindful movement activity.
Even with limited mobility, she tries to move her feet and hands to the rhythm of music. She plays bingo, colors, and solves crosswords — with small adaptations like taping papers so they don’t shift.
She is in her late 80s, a former educator, and every session I witness her courage, determination, and joy.
Her presence reminds me that strength is not always visible, and perseverance is deeply inspiring.
Finally, there’s a friend of mine who has MS.
Walking is challenging now, she uses walking sticks, and she had to give up her yoga studio. Yet she was the first person to motivate me in my Tai Chi journey. She shared her experience, practiced with me, and even attended one of my programs — sometimes seated, but always fully engaged.
She lives fully, creatively, and courageously, even when life changes the rules.
What do all these women have in common?
Persistence
Joy
Engagement with life, despite challenges
A willingness to keep moving, learning, and participating
They inspire me to:
Care for my body
Stay active
Approach life with curiosity and courage
They are living proof that age, limitations, or setbacks don’t define our vitality.
And sometimes, the quiet examples of ordinary people teach us more than any book, video, or class ever could.
