In Sun Style Tai Chi, every movement carries a lesson in balance. One side of the body becomes full, rooted and steady. The other becomes empty, light and ready to move. It is in this rhythm of full and empty that harmony is found.
When I step to the side, I feel my weight shift naturally. My supporting leg grows full, grounded firmly through the earth. My other leg becomes empty, soft, ready to follow.
The follow step brings my back foot alongside the front, keeping my feet parallel but not touching. In that subtle motion, full and empty meet. One side supports, the other carries, and my body flows as a single, connected unit.
I repeat this movement three times to one side. Then I turn and repeat it in the opposite direction. Each repetition is slightly different, yet each holds the same lesson: balance does not come from force. It comes from awareness—of weight, intention, and the space between.
The empty side is never weak.
The full side is never rigid.
Together, they create harmony. Together, they create presence. Together, they create flow.
Even in a simple side step, I feel a profound truth: life does not always move straight ahead. Sometimes we must shift, yield, and follow, step by step, to move forward with balance and grace.
Stand comfortably, feet shoulder-width apart.
Step gently to the side, feeling the fullness in your supporting leg.
Bring your back foot to follow, keeping your feet parallel but not touching. Notice the emptiness in the moving leg.
Repeat three sets to one side, then switch directions.
Move slowly, breathe naturally, and feel the rhythm of full and empty guiding your steps.
Small steps. Mindful shifts. The rhythm of balance.
Even the simplest movements can hold the deepest lessons.
