By Nelda Rodillo | Board-Certified TCHI Instructor | Founder of Vintage Vitality™ | Creator of The Unfreezing Hour™, and Resilience Through Tai Chi™
I am humbled, grateful, and honestly a little bit giddy to share that on September 29, I will be joining VON Perth-Huron's Aging Well: A 4-Week Series on Heart Health as a guest speaker.
If you're not familiar with VON, it stands for the Victorian Order of Nurses — one of Canada's oldest and most trusted community health organizations. For well over a century, VON has been showing up in towns like ours, offering home care, community support, and education so that people can live well and age well, right here where they live. When I found out they wanted a Tai Chi instructor to speak on heart health, I felt something between disbelief and pure joy. This is exactly the kind of community they are — and exactly the kind of community I hope to serve.
My talk is called Heart Health Through Inner Peace, Gentle Movement, and Tai Chi, and it's built around something I believe with my whole heart (pun very much intended):
We'll talk about the quiet, everyday stress so many of us carry — worry about our health, loneliness, caregiving, unsteady balance, restless nights — and how that stress shows up in our bodies whether we notice it or not. Then we'll talk about the good news: that slow breathing, a settled mind, and gentle movement can help our hearts recover and thrive.
And of course, we'll move together. I'll guide everyone — seated or standing, no experience needed — through a few simple, gentle Tai Chi movements, because I think the best way to understand how calming this practice is, is to actually feel it in your own body for a few minutes.
I started teaching Tai Chi in Palmerston with three students and no venue. Being invited to stand in front of a room of VON's community members — people who have trusted VON with their care for years — is not something I take lightly. It's a reminder of how far this journey has come, and how much further I believe it can go.
If the talk resonates with you, I would love for you to know about what comes next:
Whether you're a VON client, a caregiver, or simply someone curious about gentle movement, I would be so grateful to see you there. Heart health isn't about doing more — sometimes it's about learning to slow down, breathe, and trust that a little softness can be powerful medicine.
Thank you, VON, for the trust. And thank you, in advance, to everyone who shows up on September 29 — I'll be the one at the front of the room, deeply honoured to be there with you.
