On March 6, I had the joy of hosting a free (or by-donation) Tai Chi class at Renew Life Therapies in honour of International Women’s Day. I initially invited nine participants, but the room was graced by many more—what a wonderful surprise! The energy in the space was warm, welcoming, and full of curiosity.
This class, titled A Gift of Gentle Movement, focused on introducing participants to Tai Chi Easy. As a certified Tai Chi Easy Practice Leader through Roger Jahnke, O.M.D., I enjoy sharing the simplicity and accessibility of this program, designed for adults of all ages to experience the flow of energy, balance, and mindful movement.
Normally, Tai Chi Easy sequences include Tai Chi walking, which allows for full-body coordination and movement through space. However, because we had just one hour, we focused on hand movements and shifting weight.
Participants learned to flow with their center, moving each posture gently while maintaining balance, cultivating awareness, and harmonizing their energy. This approach allows the body to experience the benefits of Tai Chi without stepping, which is perfect for shorter classes or beginners.
The sequences we explored included:
Harmonizing Yin and Yang – fostering balance and internal awareness
Brush Knee, Send Qi – moving energy through the arms while gently shifting weight
Cutting the Path to Clarity – releasing tension and cultivating focus
Watching Clouds Pass – letting thoughts flow and promoting mental calm
Gathering Heaven and Earth – connecting the body with breath and cultivating grounding energy
Even in a shortened format, each participant experienced the calm, energizing effect of Tai Chi Easy, and several expressed excitement to join again on March 16.
I find these five moves particularly grounding. They are adapted from traditional Tai Chi, yet in Tai Chi Easy, they are approachable and gentle for all levels. Sometimes I even practice them seated, which is perfect for those who need extra support or want to focus solely on the flow of energy.
Tai Chi Easy evokes healing, peace of mind, and inner harmony—a feeling I wish for all my students to experience. It’s more than movement; it’s a way to reconnect with the body, breathe deeply, and cultivate calm presence.
What struck me most was the energy of the room. Everyone’s attention, curiosity, and gentle movements created a shared rhythm—a subtle dance of awareness, focus, and joy. This is what makes teaching so special: the connection between bodies and minds, and the opportunity to offer movement as a gift of self-care and mindfulness.
Even a brief session can have lasting effects. Here are some journaling prompts for anyone who practiced Tai Chi, or wants to explore mindful movement at home:
Which movement made your body feel most alive today?
How did shifting weight instead of stepping change the way your body felt?
What sensations did you notice in your hands or arms as you “sent Qi”?
How does participating in group movement make you feel emotionally or mentally?
Sometimes the most profound lessons come not from the length of practice, but from the awareness cultivated in each gentle movement.
