This morning marked the beginning of a new chapter for our Gentle Tai Chi community in Mount Forest—and what unfolded was both humbling and heartwarming.
Our original 10:00–11:00 a.m. class welcomed an incredible 32 registered students—a number that still makes me smile. Even in a large space, it was becoming clear that Tai Chi needs room to breathe, and so do we.
With the wonderful support of the community and the Mount Forest & District Sports Complex, we opened a second class from 9:00–10:00 a.m. Today was our very first morning with two sessions.
Some students graciously chose to move to the earlier class.
Several people from the waitlist were finally able to join.
And just like that, what began as one full class blossomed into two thriving communities.
The energy in both sessions was warm, welcoming, and deeply connected—the kind of energy that small towns create so naturally. There were smiles, new friendships forming, and a shared commitment to moving with gentleness and intention.
As I looked around the room today, I felt immense gratitude. What started as an idea has become something much bigger than Tai Chi. It has become a place where people gather, move, learn, laugh, and support one another.
One of the things I love most about teaching Gentle Tai Chi is witnessing what happens beyond the movements themselves.
People come looking for exercise, balance, flexibility, or stress relief.
But often, they find something more.
They discover connection.
They meet new friends.
They reconnect with neighbours.
They become part of a supportive community that encourages healthy aging and lifelong movement.
Research continues to show that social connection plays a vital role in overall well-being, especially as we age. Movement and community are a powerful combination—and Tai Chi offers both.
Every class becomes an opportunity to move our bodies while nurturing our sense of belonging.
Mount Forest continues to show me what community wellness truly looks like:
People arriving early to help set up
Friends saving spots for one another
Newcomers welcomed with warm smiles
Laughter during the warm-ups
Quiet focus during the forms
A shared sense of "we're in this together"
This is one of the reasons I love teaching in small towns.
Wellness isn't a trend here—it's a way of caring for one another.
It's found in the conversations before class, the encouragement offered to beginners, and the collective commitment to showing up for our health and well-being.
In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, these simple moments remind us how powerful community can be.
The style I teach—Sun-Style Tai Chi—is gentle, upright, and especially joint-friendly.
Known for its smooth transitions and flowing movements, Sun-Style Tai Chi is often recommended for older adults and beginners because it is accessible, adaptable, and enjoyable.
It features:
Soft, flowing steps
Minimal strain on the knees and hips
Natural, relaxed breathing
Movements that feel light and open
A strong focus on balance, coordination, and calmness
This makes it an excellent choice for anyone seeking a gentle yet effective form of exercise.
Participants often notice improvements in balance, mobility, posture, body awareness, and confidence. Many also find that the mindful nature of Tai Chi helps reduce stress and create a greater sense of calm throughout the day.
And when more than thirty people move together in a Sun-Style flow, something remarkable happens.
The room seems to breathe as one.
The movements become quieter.
The energy becomes calmer.
And for a little while, everyone shares the same rhythm.
What's happening in Mount Forest is bigger than a class.
It's a movement—both literally and figuratively.
Every week, new faces join us.
Every session, the room feels more connected.
Every class, someone says:
"I didn't know Tai Chi could feel this good."
Those moments never get old.
Together, we are building a Tai Chi family—one that spans Palmerston, Harriston, a beautifully growing Mount Forest community and soon Drayton.
The classes may take place in different towns, but the spirit is the same: kindness, encouragement, movement, and connection.
Watching these communities embrace Tai Chi has been one of the greatest joys of my teaching journey.
This morning reminded me of something important:
When people are ready for wellness, they show up.
When a community is ready for movement, it grows.
And when Tai Chi finds the right home, it flourishes.
Mount Forest is becoming one of those homes.
I am deeply grateful for every person who stepped into the room today—whether at 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m.—and for the shared intention to move gently, breathe deeply, and care for our bodies together.
Here's to the next five weeks, to new friendships, stronger bodies, calmer minds, and to the growing circle of wellness we're creating together.
One breath.
One movement.
One community at a time.
