Full Circle Vitality is a community-based, cross-cultural approach to active aging that recognizes wellbeing as more than physical fitness alone.
The model grew from Nelda Rodillo's work with older adults in rural Ontario and from a simple observation: when people are given accessible opportunities to move, become more aware of their bodies, connect with others, and reflect on their own experiences, movement can become part of a much larger experience of wellbeing.
Full Circle Vitality brings four interconnected dimensions into the same circle:
Movement is the foundation.
Gentle, accessible practices such as Tai Chi, Qigong, yoga, and mindful movement can provide opportunities for older adults to develop greater body awareness, coordination, mobility, balance, and confidence in movement.
The emphasis is not on athletic performance.
It is on participation, consistency, and meeting people where they are.
Mindfulness invites participants to slow down and pay attention—to breathing, posture, sensation, movement, and the present moment.
Rather than treating the body as something to be pushed through exercise, the practice encourages participants to develop a more attentive relationship with their own bodies.
Healthy aging does not happen in isolation.
Community provides opportunities for social interaction, encouragement, belonging, and shared experience.
In Vintage Vitality™, the class itself becomes part of the experience: people arrive as individuals and gradually become part of a community that moves, learns, and grows together.
Reflection creates space to consider what movement, aging, change, and wellbeing mean personally.
Through practices such as journaling and guided reflection, participants are invited to recognize their experiences, strengths, challenges, values, and possibilities.
These four dimensions are not intended to function as separate components.
They influence one another.
Movement can increase awareness.
Awareness can deepen confidence.
Confidence can encourage participation.
Participation can strengthen connection.
Connection can support wellbeing.
Reflection can give meaning to the experience.
And the circle continues.
This is the central idea behind Full Circle Vitality: active aging can be understood as an interconnected experience involving the body, mind, relationships, and sense of meaning.
Full Circle Vitality did not begin as a theoretical framework.
It began in community.
Through Vintage Vitality™, Nelda has worked with older adults in rural Ontario communities, creating accessible opportunities to explore gentle movement, Tai Chi, Qigong, yoga, mindfulness, and reflection.
Within these classes, she began to observe something that extended beyond the movements themselves.
Participants were not simply learning exercises.
They were building familiarity with their bodies.
They were becoming more comfortable with movement.
They were encouraging one another.
They were forming connections.
They were sharing experiences of aging.
And, in many cases, they were discovering that an hour devoted to gentle movement could become an important part of their week.
These observations led to a broader question:
What happens when we stop viewing movement as an isolated intervention and instead consider it as one part of a larger ecosystem of active aging?
Full Circle Vitality emerged from that question.
The CAG2026 presentation provides an opportunity to bring this community-based perspective into conversation with researchers, educators, practitioners, and others engaged in the study and practice of aging.
It is not a claim that one program can answer every question about healthy aging.
Rather, it is an invitation to consider what can be learned when community experience, movement practice, cultural perspective, and reflection are brought into the same conversation.
Older adults do not live only in major urban centres.
Across Canada, many live in small towns and rural communities where access to programs, transportation, specialized services, and social opportunities can look very different from what is available in larger cities.
This makes community-based approaches particularly important.
A program can be evidence-informed, but if people cannot conveniently access it, it may never become part of their lives.
Vintage Vitality™ has developed with this reality in mind.
Programs are offered in familiar community settings where older adults already gather—creating opportunities to participate without requiring a specialized facility or a particular level of physical ability.
The goal is accessibility.
The goal is belonging.
And the goal is to make healthy movement feel like something that belongs naturally within community life.
For many older adults, beginning a new movement practice can feel intimidating.
A community-based environment can change that experience.
Participants can move at their own level, use modifications when appropriate, and gradually develop familiarity and confidence.
There is also something powerful about seeing peers of different ages and abilities participating together.
It communicates a simple message:
You do not have to be an athlete to be active.
You do not have to be young to begin.
And you do not have to do it alone.
Tai Chi is an important foundation of the Vintage Vitality™ approach.
In particular, Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention, developed through the Tai Chi for Health Institute, provides a gentle and accessible framework that can be adapted for older adults with different levels of experience and physical ability.
Its slow, controlled movements encourage attention to posture, weight shifting, coordination, balance, and body awareness.
Within Vintage Vitality™, Tai Chi is not presented as a cure or as a replacement for medical treatment.
Instead, it is one component of a broader approach to active aging.
Tai Chi becomes a way to practice being present in the body.
It becomes an opportunity to develop movement confidence.
And it can provide a shared language through which participants connect with one another.
The broader Vintage Vitality™ experience may also incorporate Qigong, yoga, mindful movement, breathing practices, and journaling.
The intention is not to accumulate activities.
It is to create a coherent experience of movement, awareness, connection, and reflection.
At the heart of Vintage Vitality™ is a belief that aging should not be defined solely by decline.
Aging is a human journey.
It can include change, loss, adaptation, uncertainty, discovery, resilience, connection, and growth.
It can also be a time when people deepen their understanding of themselves and what matters to them.
For Nelda, aging with dignity, strength, and grace means creating opportunities for older adults to remain active participants in their own lives.
It means respecting where each person is today rather than focusing only on where they used to be.
It means recognizing ability without ignoring limitation.
It means creating space for movement without demanding perfection.
And it means remembering that wellbeing is deeply human.
We are bodies that move.
We are minds that notice.
We are people who need connection.
And we are individuals with stories that deserve to be heard.
That is the spirit behind Vintage Vitality™.
The CAG2026 presentation is not the destination.
It is another beginning.
The opportunity to present Full Circle Vitality at a national gerontology conference opens the door to new conversations, questions, collaborations, and learning.
The model will continue to evolve through community experience and through dialogue with others working to understand and support active aging.
Because the most meaningful measure of a model is not simply how beautifully it can be described.
It is what happens when it meets real people in real communities.
And the journey continues—one breath, one movement, one connection, and one story at a time.
