Mornings set the tone for your day. Even a short, 5-minute gentle movement routine can help reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and bring calm awareness before your day begins. You don’t need a lot of space, props, or time — just yourself and a willingness to move mindfully.
1. Gentle Sway and Shake
Purpose: Wake up joints and release tension.
Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees soft.
Slowly sway side to side, letting your arms move naturally.
Shake hands, wrists, and shoulders lightly if it feels good.
Repeat for 6–8 slow breaths, noticing tension melting away.
2. Standing Cat-Cow Stretch
Purpose: Mobilizes the spine and warms up your torso.
Place hands lightly on your thighs.
Inhale, lift your chest and gently arch your back (Cow).
Exhale, round your spine, tucking your chin to your chest (Cat).
Repeat 5–6 times, moving slowly and breathing deeply.
3. Standing Side Stretches
Purpose: Opens the sides of your body and shoulders.
Inhale, raise your arms overhead, interlace fingers lightly if comfortable.
Exhale, gently lean to the right, feeling a stretch along the left side.
Inhale back to center, exhale leaning to the left.
Repeat 3–4 times on each side.
4. Hip, Knee, and Ankle Rotations
Purpose: Loosens lower body joints, improves balance.
Hip circles: Place hands on hips, rotate hips clockwise 3–5 times, then counterclockwise.
Knee circles: Place hands lightly on knees, bend slightly, rotate knees inward and outward.
Ankle circles: Lift one foot slightly, rotate ankle clockwise and counterclockwise; switch feet.
5. Gentle Arm and Shoulder Rolls
Purpose: Releases tension in shoulders, neck, and upper back.
Inhale, lift shoulders up toward ears.
Exhale, roll shoulders back and down.
Repeat 5–6 times, then reverse the direction.
Take 1–2 minutes after your routine to jot down:
One sensation you noticed in your body.
A small intention for the day.
One thing you are grateful for in your health or mobility.
Even a few minutes of mindful movement in the morning can set a calm, grounded tone for your day.
