A question I often hear from students is: "What is the difference between Daoist Tai Chi and the Sun Style Tai Chi that you teach?"
It is a beautiful question because it opens the door to understanding that Tai Chi is not just one single practice. Like a great tree with many branches, Tai Chi has grown into many different styles and approaches, each carrying its own history, philosophy, and purpose.
At the heart of all Tai Chi practices is the same intention: cultivating balance, harmony, awareness, and a deeper connection between the body, mind, and breath.
Tai Chi (Taijiquan) originated in China as a martial art and evolved into a practice that supports health, longevity, and inner calm. Over centuries, different families and teachers developed their own forms, creating the style we know today, including Chen, Yang, Wu, and Sun styles.
Although the movements may look different, the principles remain similar:
Slow, controlled movements
Relaxation and softness
Mindful breathing
Weight shifting and balance
Improving coordination and body awareness
Daoist Tai Chi is an approach inspired by Daoist philosophy, which emphasizes living in harmony with nature, balance, and the flow of energy (qi).
Many Doaist Tai Chi practices focused on:
Continuous flowing movements
Relaxation and flexibility
Mind-body connection
Meditation through movement
Cultivating internal awareness
The term "Daoist Tai Chi" can refer to different organization and approaches that incorporate Daoist principles into their teaching.
The Sun Style Tai Chi I teach comes from the Sun family tradition, developed by Sun Lutang, a respected martial artist and master of internal arts.
Sun Style is known for its:
Gentle, flowing movements
Upright posture
Smooth stepping patterns
Agile footwork
Integration of Tai Chi, Xing Yi, and Bagua principles
One of the reasons Sun Style is especially suitable for older adults and people concerned about balance is its emphasis on stepping, weight shifting, and maintaining stability while moving.
This makes it a wonderful foundation for programs such as Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention, developed by Dr. Paul Lam and his team, which uses Sun Style Tai Chi principles in a safe, accessible way.
Neither approach is "better." They simply have different pathways.
Some people are drawn to the philosophical and meditative aspects of Daoist Tai Chi. Others appreciate the structured movements and balance-focused approach of Sun Style Tai Chi.
The most important question is:
Does the practice support your health, your confidence, and your joy in movement?
A Tai Chi practice should meet you where you are.
My goal is to help people rediscover strength, balance, and vitality through gentle movement.
For many adults, especially those over 50, the greatest gift of Tai Chi is not perfection of movement. It is the ability to feel more confident in their bodies, more connected to their breath, and more present in their daily lives.
Through my Vintage Vitality™ approach, I combine Tai Chi, Qigong, mindful movement, and reflection practices to support vibrant aging — because growing older does not mean slowing down from life. It means learning how to move through life with greater wisdom, awareness, and grace.
Whether your journey begins with Daoist Tai Chi, Sun Style Tai Chi, Qigong, or another mindful movement practice, the invitation is the same:
Move gently. Breathe deeply. Live fully.
