By Nelda Rodillo | Founder of Vintage Vitality™ | Creator of The Unfreezing Hour™, and Resilience Through Tai Chi™
This afternoon, I taught a Gentle Tai Chi session at a beautiful yoga studio in Fergus — my first time in that space. The moment I walked in, I felt the openness of the room: spacious, warm, and quietly inviting. It was the perfect setting for a practice meant to bring peace, grounding, and a soft return to the body.
The participants were a group of young women whose identities I will protect, but whose presence I will never forget. They arrived with openness — ready to try something new, ready to move, ready to breathe, ready to be in the present moment. Their willingness alone felt like a gift.
We started with Unfreezing Rotations — gentle movements that soften the joints, hydrate the fascia, and help the body feel safe enough to let go. These simple rotations are often the doorway into deeper calm, especially for those carrying tension or navigating difficult seasons of life.
From there, we moved into Shibashi Qigong, letting the breath guide the body in soft, flowing patterns. The room grew quieter, steadier. You could feel the shift — that moment when movement becomes medicine.
Because these were young women, their bodies responded quickly. They learned:
the Opening
Single Whip
Cloud Hands
…all from Sun-Style Tai Chi — a form known for its softness, accessibility, and gentle spirals.
Their ability to pick up the movements wasn’t what moved me most.
It was their openness.
Their willingness to try.
Their curiosity.
Their presence.
Their courage to step into something unfamiliar and meet it with grace.
This session wasn’t just about Tai Chi.
It was about giving them a tool kit — something they can return to when life feels overwhelming:
a way to calm the nervous system
a way to soften the body
a way to breathe through difficult moments
a way to reconnect with themselves
Gentle movement can be a lifeline.
Today, I saw that truth in real time.
I left the studio feeling grateful — and hopeful.
Hopeful that this one session might open the door to more.
Hopeful that these young women felt even a small shift inside themselves.
Hopeful that Tai Chi can become a quiet companion for them as they navigate life.
Driving home, I carried a soft happiness with me — the kind that comes from witnessing openness, resilience, and the simple beauty of people showing up for themselves.
