This gentle outdoor practice features Cloud Hands (Wave Hands Like Clouds), a foundational movement in Tai Chi that supports balance, coordination, and mindful movement.
Filmed in a peaceful family yard surrounded by trees, this practice shows a sideways follow step—stepping one foot to the side and allowing the other to follow, keeping the feet parallel and grounded. The movement is slow, controlled, and accessible, making it ideal for beginners and adults over 50 looking for safe, low-impact exercise.
In this variation, the palms face inward, creating a more grounded and centered experience. This subtle shift encourages a deeper mind-body connection, helping you move with calm awareness rather than force.
Cloud Hands can help:
Improve balance and stability
Support coordination between upper and lower body
Encourage relaxation and mental clarity
Promote gentle strength and mobility

Yesterday, I stepped outside into our family yard in Indang Cavite to practice.
The sun was shining bright, and yes—it was warm. But the trees offered just enough shade to make the space feel calm and welcoming.
It became one of those quiet moments where movement feels like a conversation with your body.
And I found myself returning to a simple question:
What can Cloud Hands really do for the body?
Let me share what I’ve experienced.
Cloud Hands—also known as Wave Hands Like Clouds—is one of the most loved movements in Tai Chi.
It’s soft.
It’s flowing.
And it gently invites you to slow down.
As I moved side to side under the trees, I followed my breath and the natural shifting of my weight. Even in the warmth, the practice felt calming—like a quiet pause in the middle of the day.
In this practice, I used a sideways follow step:
Step one foot to the side
Let the other foot follow
Feet come parallel (but not touching)
Then move in the other direction
It’s simple, but it does so much.
This kind of stepping helps:
Improve balance
Build confidence in walking
Strengthen the legs in a gentle, supportive way
Cloud Hands is a beautiful way to connect the body.
The hands move in soft, flowing circles while the feet step and follow.
At first, it may take a little focus.
But over time, your body begins to understand.
And when it does:
Movement becomes smoother
Balance feels more steady
The mind begins to quiet
There are different ways to practice Cloud Hands, and even a small detail—like the direction of your palms—can change how the movement feels.
In many traditional forms, the palms face outward as the hands move across the body.
This can feel like:
Gently pressing or offering energy outward
Creating a sense of expansion
Opening through the chest and arms
It often brings a feeling of lightness and openness.
In my practice, my palms face inward—toward me.
And this creates a different experience.
It feels:
More grounded
More centered
More personal and calm
Almost like you are gently gathering energy inward, or simply staying connected to yourself as you move.
Both approaches are beautiful.
Both support:
Balance
Coordination
Mindful movement
The difference is in how it feels in your body.
Some days you may want to open outward.
Other days, you may want to turn inward.
And that’s the beauty of this practice—it meets you where you are.
What I love most about Cloud Hands is that it adapts to you.
There is no need to rush.
No need to force.
You can move:
Slowly
Gently
In a way that feels safe and supportive
Even in the heat of the sun, I felt at ease—supported by the shade, the rhythm, and the simplicity of the movement.
Cloud Hands may look gentle—and it is—but it offers so much:
Better balance
Improved coordination
A calm, steady mind
A deeper connection with your body
Sometimes, the most powerful movements are the softest ones.
And sometimes, all we need is a little shade, a quiet space, and the willingness to move like clouds.
After your practice, take a quiet moment and reflect:
Did I feel more open today, or more inward and grounded? What did my body need?
Write a few words. There’s no right answer—just your experience.
