By Nelda Rodillo | Author and Creator of Vintage Vitality™
When I step into a room of older adults, I don’t just see students — I see stories. Each person carries decades of experience, resilience, and wisdom. And yet, many also carry arthritis, balance challenges, or the quiet weight of isolation.
This is where Vintage Vitality™ was born: a program that blends Tai Chi, gentle yoga, Qigong, and reflective journaling to help older adults move with dignity, strength, and grace.
My father, Cornelio Gatpandan, lived with arthritis and gout until his passing at 91. He and my mother, Aida, co-founded the Ginintuang Binhi Elderly Association in Cavite, Philippines — a grassroots group that grew from a small gathering in our home to a vibrant community of 81 members.
When COVID-19 forced gatherings to stop, I saw how quickly isolation could erode health and spirit. That moment became my turning point. I trained in Sun-Style Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention under Dr. Paul Lam, and combined it with yoga and journaling to create Vintage Vitality™.
When I returned to Cavite, I introduced Tai Chi to Ginintuang Binhi. Seventy-seven members joined the first demonstration, and now a dedicated practice group is preparing a Tai Chi flow for the upcoming May Flower Festival on May 28.
In May, I will also be teaching 638 freshmen from the BS Criminology department at Cavite State University, showing how mindful movement can build resilience across life stages.
What strikes me most is not just the improved balance or reduced stiffness — it’s the joy. Smiles, laughter, and a renewed sense of belonging fill the room.
Today, Vintage Vitality™ thrives in small-town Ontario, Canada, through partnerships with the Seniors’ Centre for Excellence and Building Bridges Adult Program. In the Philippines, collaborations with provincial organizations and universities are expanding the reach of Tai Chi and gentle movement.
The message is simple: wellness is not about youth or perfection — it’s about resilience across life stages.
Vintage Vitality™ is more than exercise. It’s a philosophy:
Move gently, but consistently.
Honor your story, even the painful chapters.
Build community, because resilience is stronger together.
As I teach, I carry my father’s legacy, my mother’s leadership, and the voices of every elder who has shown me that aging is not decline — it is transformation.
