Starting a new habit can feel intimidating, but just like the first gentle move in a Tai Chi sequence, the most important part of journaling is simply beginning. You don’t need to be a writer or have a "perfect" life to journal; you only need a pen, a piece of paper, and a few minutes to yourself.
🎥 Watch: How to Start Journaling for Mental Health
In this video, I walk you through the easy steps to move from a blank page to a meaningful reflection. I've also included a special set of prompts to help guide your thoughts.
Three Steps to a Stress-Free Start
If you are new to this practice, remember that your journal is a private sanctuary. There are no rules, no grades, and no "right" way to do it.
Keep it Brief: You don’t need to write pages of text. Start with just 2–5 minutes a day. If a full paragraph feels like too much, use bullet points to list how you feel or what you did.
Pick Your "When": Pair your journaling with an existing habit. Many in our community find that journaling right after a gentle movement session or with their morning tea helps them stay consistent.
Forget Perfection: Do not worry about spelling, grammar, or messy handwriting. The goal is to get your thoughts out of your head and onto the paper, freeing up mental space for joy and presence.
✍️ Guided Prompts from the Video
To help you move past the "blank page," I’ve included three of my favorite heart-centered prompts in this session. You can follow along with the video or try them right now:
The Power of Three: Write down 3 things you are grateful for today—no matter how small.
The "Why" of Happiness: List 5 things that make you happy and, most importantly, why they bring you joy.
Celebrating You: What qualities about yourself do you love most? (This is a beautiful way to honor your own Vintage Vitality).
🌿 Nelda’s Vitality Tip:
Before you pick up your pen, try a simple Tai Chi "Opening the Chest" move. As you breathe in, imagine you are clearing space for new thoughts. When the body is open, the words flow much more freely onto the page.
